I am pleased to have Shawna Hill, author of In Between Lies and Intimate Illusions as my guest today!
First and foremost…thank you Stacey for having me and giving me the opportunity to be your guest for the day! I appreciate your support and would love to get to know your reading audience as well as familiarize them with me and my characters.
I thought I would address “the write to make a living” since it’s the name of this blog (love the name) and it’s what I would absolutely love to do! I feel in order for me to even gain the honor to make a living writing, I need to create stories that captivate the reading audience, whether it’s by writing romance, suspense, thrillers, mystery, etc. or a combination of all in one. My books, I feel, may have hit on each one of those points and hopefully if they did, then I’ve done my job well. Now on to making a living at it...
In creating the romantic aspect, I drew upon my own emotions and how I would want to live out my romance(s) to the fullest. Of course, there is no such thing as a true to life fairy tale romance these days, unless you are the Duchess of Cambridge Kate. Now I’m sure that was a whirlwind romance set on a stage all of its own. That’s just not happening to the everyday average Jane and John Doe; if it is, then its far and few between. Are you looking for escapism out of reality? Or do you want it to be believable? Actually, both worlds can be created. Anyway, there is the promise of a great budding romance that starts out slow in In Between Lies…so check one.
Next, we can look at suspense. I am a sucker for suspense/thrillers! I love the build up things, the friction, anxiety and frustration of not getting there fast enough…slow agony…in a good way, of course! It can be sexual (the best kind), psychological, thrilling, or haunting. It doesn’t matter to me. That is what keeps readers attention and coming back for more. A real page turner! Again, both of my books, I feel, offer those aspects to the nth degree…but there is always room for more. I love to turn the heat up and see how each character reacts to their given or chosen situation…check two.
Then you have the mystery, the unknown. This is a little different than the suspense. With suspense you know what will inevitability happen, it’s just the when that you are not aware of… a strong teaser. With mystery/drama, however, you have no clue what is going to happen. The element of surprise is also a strong captivator (provided people care about the characters and what happens to them). Hopefully, I have been able to connect with everyone that reads the books so that they really care and want to see the characters through their dilemmas…check three.
Ok, so I have three checks YAY! That constitutes the write to make a living right? I’ve made you feel the romance, suspense, thrills, mystery, and drama… all the makings of a great story! Now continuing to churn them out and keeping you interested is the key. I absolutely love to write and feel that we all should have jobs that we love. This is the job that I would love to have and to bring those elements to you on a continual basis. But I need to start somewhere… why not start here with you? If you do have the opportunity to read the books, I’d love to get your feedback!
